Underground Work - Confined Space
Confined Space Work for Outside Plant Applications :
Miami Business Telephone Corp. is certified and trained for Confined Space Entry.
OSHA defines confined space entry as a space that:
- Is large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily enter and perform assigned work; and
- Has limited or restricted means for entry or exit (for example, tanks, vaults, and pits are spaces that may have limited means of entry.); and
- Is not designed for continuous employee occupancy.
A real life example of a confined space is an underground manhole. Many times, for a customer who requires connectivity across a large landscape or campus (universities, government agencies) will require this type of work. In order for MBT to install outside plant fiber/copper wiring, our installers are required to enter into the confined space which is most commonly known as a manhole. Below you can see our employees safely entering into a confined space on an installation we did a few years ago.
These confined spaces require the use of:
- Water removal pumps
- Safety rescue equipment
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Monitoring of hazardous gases & oxygen levels and
- Proper ventilation + lighting
